Mark Sanchez has been named the starting QB for the New York Jets this year. Now I can’t blame the Jets, they don’t really have anyone else to turn to. But the hype he has received seems unbelievable. He is a talented QB, that’s not a question. But if you look at the schedule, the conference he’s in, along with the talent on the team with him, it doesn’t bode well for him to be successful this year.
Now, if a QB is receiving a great amount of hype, he should be able to hold his own against a top level team right? Well I watched him play against the Ravens on Monday (preseason, I know) and he was a Ray Lewis drop away from throwing two INT’s returned for touchdowns. That’s not greatness.
Now, looking at the team on the field, it doesn’t seem like he will have many playmakers to get the ball to, save for Leon Washington and Jericho Cotchery. So, the lack of talent around him will hurt his performances. At USC he had plenty of talent to distribute the ball to, he only had to be a game manager. With the lack of talent on the Jets he now has to be a play maker, something he hasn’t had to do ever.
Finally, looking at the schedule, I don’t see them reaching .500, much less making noise in one of the top conferences in the NFL. The wins I figure are “gimmes” would be: Bills (only at home), Raiders, and the Bengals. After that, the games that they are capable of winning are the Texans, Saints, Bills, Jaguars, Bucs, and Dolphins (only in New York). The rest of those games are guaranteed losses (a total of 7 for sure losses). They just don’t have the schedule to win many games.
I certainly don’t think the Jets will be rethinking their decision of drafting Sanchez, I just don’t think he deserves anywhere near the hype he’s been getting for the past few months. He will be like an average QB, and probably in a few years, he’ll be exceptional. So just lay off the hype, for now.

pretty good analysis. although i would have to add dustin keller to that list of playmakers. thomas jones is a good between the tackles runner and leon washington is THE best KR/3rd down back in the league. washington needs to get more carries.
one thing to consider is that the jets were the best team in the AFC last year midseason. they lost 4 out of the last 5 games because brett favre is a fucking asshole. right now, as im writing this, i have full confidence that sanchez is a better qb, and certainly a better game manager, than favre has been and ever will be. the jets have a pretty good defense with a pro bowl caliber safety, a shut down corner, hard hitting linebackers and a solid d-line.
he’s just a part of the new york hypemachine, but i would say that he’ll be the best qb taken in 2009
