The U Report: Roster Analysis – Quarterbacks

Posted by Factorback at 2nd July, 2009

What Happened in 2008?

UM boasted the two previous Mr. Football winners from the state of Florida: Robert Marve, and Jacory Harris.  Both of them had stellar careers coming into Miami.  Because of youth they had growing pains but still were talented enough to win some games.  Jacory Harris seemed to be more efficient and less mistake prone and he seemed more polished, which eventually led to Robert Marve transfering to Purdue.  Good luck to him, he will still be a great college quarterback.

What to expect in 2009?

With only one quarterback now, expect Miami’s offense to evolve into a dangerous and explosive one.  Jacory Harris enters his second year as ‘the Guy’ at UM and he has dreamed of this moment for his whole life.  The next thing he will have to do is show he can endure a whole season as the starter, not spot minutes with Marve.  With the running backs and receivers he has to work with, expect him to have a great year throwing the ball, possibly setting up a potential heisman candidacy in 2010 (potential).

The Depth Chart

After Jacory, there is Taylor Cook and Cannon Smith.  Smith saw a few minutes of game time in last years opener against Charleston Southern, but Cook has been named the number 2 quarterback.  Neither should be impact players, Cook has the build and arm strength to be a serviceable backup if Jacory gets hurt, but that would be a very large drop off in terms of talent.
